Variety in Reading
More from the reading comprehension hand-out... It is easy to get stuck in one type of literature (historical fiction and biography for us,) but it is important for our children to be familiar with a variety of written works. (I am certainly no expert, so these are not exact categories, just a list to inspire a search for different types of works.)
o narrative
o speech
o essay
o letter
o mystery
o periodicals
o informational
o short story
o drama/ play
o picture books
o fiction – realistic
o functional reading
o humor, parody, riddles

o historical fiction (includes biographical fiction)
o fiction – fantasy (includes science fiction), novels
o folk and fairy tales (includes tall tales)
